A Quantitative Study of Pelvic Parasympathetic Preganglionic Axons, Ganglion Cells and Postganglionic Axons in the Rat

Abstract
The number of pelvic parasympathetic preganglionic axons; ganglion cells and postganglionic axons were determined electron microscopically in adult male rats, which were operated microsurgically to remove sensory and sympathetic axons distributed to the pelvic organs prior to sacrifice.
1. The number of the parasympathetic preganglionic axons in the pelvic nerve were 2358, the ganglion cells 6638, and the postganglionic axons 22484 in average. Thus, the following findings were calculated. (1) A preganglionic axon synapses to 2.8 ganglion cells in average. (2) A postganglionic axon originated from a ganglion cell branches out to 3.4 in average. (3) The ratio of preganglionic axons to the postganglionic axons is 1 : 9.5.
2. The preganglionic axons(pelvic nerve) formed 4 bundles but the postganglionic axons radiating from the pelvic ganglion formed 150 bundles. The myelinated/unmyelinated ratio of preganglionic axons(1 : 8.6) was similar in 4 bundles but that of postganglionic axons(1 : 4-1 : 30) was very variable in every bundle.
